Media Studies

Course Description

The media is now one of the most prevalent aspects of our society. On this course you will gain an understanding of its importance and relevance, as well as a greater understanding of its many forms and depth.

Throughout the course you will explore the way media is represented and received by audiences through its various forms, including marketing, music, advertising, video games, film or in print. You will also explore the varying media forms and products across television, mainstream media and online.

The course consists of two exam modules;

Component 3

is the Non examined Assessment where you will make a selection of media forms such as music videos, magazines, television programmes and film marketing campaigns.

Media Studies will help you to develop valuable transferable skills such as critical thinking, analysis, research, planning, skills of enquiry and evaluation, practical skills, creativity, time management, essay writing skills and more.

You will also have the opportunity to apply what you have learned through the production of your own media texts, exploring and creating media forms such as music videos, magazines, television, websites and film marketing.

There were 2.4m filled jobs in the UK creative industries in 2022 – a 14.1 per cent rise since 2019. Employment in the screen industries has grown by over 20% since 2009

2 Written examinations are weighted at 70% of the qualification

Non-exam assessment: Cross-Media Production, is worth 30% of qualification

Porfolio development enrichment will support learners in their applications to creative courses.

Short film workshops

Talks and Visits to industry specialists such as Jo Spence from Into Film and Coolbox a video production company in Manchester.

Students are also supported to apply for the British Film Industry Residential programme A variety of courses for 16 to 19-year-olds to develop skills and build a career in the film industry.
