Film Studies

Course Description

The Film Industry is constantly changing, expanding and capturing the world鈥檚 imagination. You will have the opportunity to analyse some of the most influential films and art pieces from past decades, exploring the world of cinema by analysing ground breaking films from past to present, such as Trainspotting and La La Land.

You will have a passion for Film as the course deals with textual, theoretical, historical and critical approaches. You will look at how Film is constructed and utilise many of the same analytical skills required by English Literature. This course also explores the role of the spectator and the psychology behind audience response. You will look at a diverse range of films from classic Hollywood cinema such as Vertigo, to new Hollywood, with challenging films from directors such as Danny Boyle and Quentin Tarantino.

The course consists of two exam modules;

Component 1 where you will study

Hollywood 1930 - 1990

American film since 2012

British film since 1995

Component 2 where you will study

Global Film

Documentary Film

Silent Film

Experimental Film

Component 3

Coursework element where you will make a Short film or a Screenplay

Your creative and practical skills will be developed through the coursework element, which will require you to create a short film or script and storyboard. Enrichment opportunities are available which have previously included visiting film/TV sets and mentoring by industry professionals.

The UK film industry has gone from strength to strength.

It鈥檚 no longer just James Bond that鈥檚 filmed in the UK. In fact, Great Britain is increasingly Hollywood鈥檚 favourite location to film outside the US, leading to record breaking growth in employment.

Amazon Studios recently spent听拢700 million听constructing new studios in London as part of its Lord of the Rings-based series. Alongside productions like The Batman II, the UK film industry鈥檚 greatest days are ahead.

Many students go on to University courses such as Film and Television BA, Film Production BA, Film Studies BA and Film and Creative Writing BA.

A vast number of career options are open to you such as Storyboard Artist.

Runner, Scriptwriter, Editor and Visual Effects Artist, Director, Cinematographer.

2 exams, each worth 35%, and Non-examined assessment is worth 30%.

Portfolio development enrichment will support learners in their applications to creative courses.

Short film workshops

Talks and Visits to industry specialists such as Jo Spence from Into Film and Coolbox, a video production company in Manchester.

Students are also supported to apply for the British Film Industry Residential programme, a variety of courses for 16 to 19-year-olds to develop skills and build a career in the film industry ()
