Course Description

This exciting course is designed to encourage you to pursue your own personal exploration in diverse genres of fashion, textiles and craft. As a Textiles student, you will have the chance to develop your artistic skills and experiment with a breadth of materials and techniques in our purpose built studio space.

Your practical work follows a pathway of analytical research of artist and designers鈥 work, development and idea refinement to final practical pieces within the exploration of a given theme. Personal exploration is encouraged, as are independent student work, thought and idea generation.

This course is ideal if you are a creative person and you have a passion for pattern, colour, design and making or material innovation.

Year 1:

鈼徧 Skill Building Phase

鈼徧 Personal Project: Choose to develop the area you are most interested in

Year 2:

鈼徧 Component 1: Personal Investigation (60% of A Level Grade)

鈼徧 Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40% of A Level Grade)

听You will take part in skills workshops looking at textiles materials and areas such as:

鈼徧 surface design

鈼徧 embroidery

鈼徧 beading/embellishment

鈼徧 fabric manipulation

鈼徧 weaving

鈼徧 knit and crochet

鈼徧 Fashion design: pattern cutting/construction

鈼徧 trend forecasting and range planning

鈼徧 textile art

This will help you discover the type of textile practitioner you are. You will then apply the skills you have learned in briefs using research, development of ideas and refinement to finished pieces. All work is carried out in sketchbooks, with additional sampling and making. You will cover a range of techniques including use of tools and machinery such as the heat press, sewing machines and laser cutter.

More advanced techniques and skills are also taught and developed including CAD processes including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
